USA: see the green Statue of Liberty in New York

Do you know why the Statue of Liberty is green?

The statue’s exterior is made of pure copper, and when exposed to oxygen in the air, it oxidates. A fine crust is then developed that protects the original copper and this layer is of green color. The process is called patination (on copper and also on bronze).

When gifted by France to the USA in 1886, the 46 meters* high statue was completely brown, and it took about 30 years for the statue to turn from its original copper color to this green…

* (It is 93 m high with the base)

The statue of Liberty is a UNESCO world heritage site !
